The overall objectives of this project were twofold. The first objective was to develop a comprehensive and user-friendly biofiltration performance tracking tool that allows participating utilities to monitor “biofilter health” and to effectively manage and interpret performance data. Biofilter health can be determined through the holistic evaluation of multiple water quality, hydraulic, and microbial parameters that identify early stages of biological fouling or treatment deficiencies to detect (and mitigate) potential problems before they fully manifest.

The second objective was to evaluate hydrogen peroxide (peroxide) supplementation as a biofiltration enhancement strategy at the full scale at the Ta mpa Bay Regional Surface Water Treatment Plant (TBRSWTP). Peroxide-supplemented and control (no peroxide supplementation) biofilters were monitored for hydraulic, water quality, and microbial information through the use and optimization of real-time and non-real time monitoring tools.
