WALNUT CREEK, Calif., August 11, 2020 -- Carollo Engineers, Inc. recently awarded scholarships to two college-bound students who reside in the Bayview-Hunters Point area of southeast San Francisco and will attend a college or vocational program in the fall of 2020. Each student will receive a total of $12,000 over four years to fund their college education.
In total, 78 students will receive Maisin Scholarships, four of which are thanks to the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission’s (SFPUC) social impact partners. This year’s recipients are Karla Magallenes from Lowell High School, Bryan De Leon from Gateway High School, Kimari Guillory from Abraham Lincoln High School, and Karrieem Mays from Ruth Asawa San Francisco School of the Arts.
Carollo has been part of the SFPUC’s Social Impact Partnership Program since 2017 and is sponsoring two students: Karla Magallenes and Bryan De Leon.
Karla will receive the Dr. Espanola Jackson Scholarship in honor of Dr. Jackson, a civil rights and community advocate for the Bayview-Hunters Point area. Karla came to the United States with her parents as a one-year-old from Peru and will study psychology at the University of Miami, where she will explore mental health issues from a multicultural perspective.
Bryan was born in Guatemala and lives in the Bayview district in San Francisco. He hopes to study science, technology, engineering, and math fields at the University of California, Santa Cruz, where he plans to major in computer science or engineering. Bryan will receive the STEM Scholarship.
“We believe in the power of education for our young people and understand the important role the Maisin Scholarships serves to create educational equity for our San Francisco high school seniors,” said Carollo senior vice president Emilio Cruz. “Investing in the Maisin Scholars is a way to give back and pay it forward. We are inspired by these student scholars and know they will change the world as they pursue their dreams.”
In addition to financial support, the Maisin Scholars will have access to internship opportunities, peer support, and academic and career counseling through the program.
