Carollo Engineers, Inc. has been working closely with Clean Water Services (Oregon) to develop and test a demonstration-scale advanced treatment system. The demonstration is part of a larger effort from Clean Water Services to promote the use of recycled water. This particular demonstration purifies disinfected secondary effluent through microfiltration, reverse osmosis, and ultraviolet light advanced oxidation. The project team documented the purity of the water through a detailed analysis of pathogens and trace pollutants, demonstrating that the purified water quality exceeded all drinking water standards, all standards being set for indirect potable reuse and direct potable reuse, and was protective of public health. An exciting and innovative outcome of this research is that local brewers will be making beer out of the high purity water produced by the advanced treatment system.
