The City of Tampa is testing a technology that has never been used in the U.S. for treating drinking water. The Suspended Ion Exchange (SIX) treatment process has the potential to improve water quality, use fewer chemicals, reduce costs, and enhance plant safety. Carollo/Ramboll designed and will operate a year-long pilot study of this pioneering technology at the David L. Tippin Water Treatment Facility – this will be the first large-scale test of the technology in the United States. Due to the high level of organics in the water, treatment can be challenging, but the new system could reduce chemical use significantly, saving the city up to $4 million a year.
